On April 22, 1970, during the “Jesus People” movement, I accepted Jesus into my heart. I felt SO loved, SO clean and fresh inside! It was as if I was brand new – I remember that part of it as if it were yesterday! I remember the following weekend, getting together with a youth group, heading down to the beach with tracks and a heart on fire to share my new found Friend with everyone I could. Life was good!
As the years progressed, I was a lot like the parable of the seeds . . . His Word did not fall on good soil, I’m afraid. I was still grateful for my salvation, of course, but it became more like ‘fire insurance’ than any type of relationship. I went to church, sang with the choir, taught Sunday school, attended camps, even was a camp counselor; but, I PERSONALLY did not have a ‘relationship’ with Jesus. I was doing all the right things, saying all the right things, but living my life like everyone else in the world.
A heart after discipleship has become a passion of mine, due to this very fact! So many years were wasted as I wandered through the desert, like the Israelites, they heard of the promised land, even saw the promised land, but refused to enter in.
Whatever your re-birth day is/was, my friends, it is not about obtaining a ‘get out of hell’ pass, or ‘fire insurance’. It is recognizing that Jesus Christ IS God in the flesh, took our sins upon Himself, died on the cross (for US) and rose again – He IS coming back for us, His bride! He gave us His Holy Spirit to be with us – to teach us, direct our steps, comfort us, give us all power to face anything that comes our way. It is a VERY personal relationship that needs to be nurtured every day. How? Through reading His Word, through prayer, praise, worship, being still in His presence; it is also through fellowship with other believers, sitting under anointed teachers, and being active in Kingdom work. Just as you would spend time with your very best friend, or beloved spouse, so we must spend time in the presence of our Lord!
Do not let your ‘brand new’ turn into something else! He is continually working on us – IF we let Him – to shape us and mold us into mighty warriors for His glory! Let the fire of our 1st love never leave us!!!
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6b
“Yet, O Lord, You are our Father. We are the clay, You are the potter; we are all the work of Your hand.” Isaiah 64:8
May our Lord continue to ‘grow you up’ on your journey with Him! Be blessed and be a blessing!
