On Track or Off Track? The Covenant Express.

I chose this title because our lives are either on track or off track with God . . . and because, at my church we’ve been digging into what “Covenant” really is – that by understanding what that is, we can KNOW Who God IS.

“He is a Covenant God”– this is a phrase I’m finding myself writing over and over in the margins of my Bible as I’m reading this year because it has it my spirit so hard – opened up my eyes to so many facets of God’s actions. Covenant – a contract, a commitment, something concrete, binding, not to be broken, if it is said…it is done…no “ifs”, “ands” or “buts”!

In Deuteronomy 4:23 we are admonished to “not forget the covenant”. But . . . we do . . . we allow our lives to get “off track” far too often, if we’re honest with ourselves. We have good intentions, yet when things ‘happen’ we tend to focus more on the thing(s) than upon the Word.

God’s Word is TRUE, God does NOT lie, does not ‘change His mind’, and is “faithful to complete that which He has started.” (Numbers 23, 19, Philippians 1:6) Why? Because He IS a covenant God.

So, how can we get to the place where we stay on track consistently? The answer is back in Deuteronomy . . . Deuteronomy 4:9 says, “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” This was spoken to the Israelites as they were about to enter into the promised land. The Lord had showed them time and time again Who He was . . . His faithfulness, the list is extensive (it covered 40 years). “You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; beside Him there is no other.” (vs 35)

In a footnote for vs 32, (Life Application Study Bible, pg 260), there is a great point made. Let me share it with you, “How tempted we are to look ever where else but to God for our guidance and leadership! We trust medical doctors, financial advisers, and news commentators, but do we trust God? Get God’s advice first (4:39,40), and recognize His authority over every dimension of life.”

Okay, perhaps you are thinking that your circumstances are different, that you don’t have examples to look back on to help you remember His faithfulness and/or provision. Then ‘borrow’ from someone else. Look and see how He brought them through – and then KNOW that He is the same now as He was then, with them, and the same now as He was back thousands of years ago with the Israelites! (Hebrews 13:8)

When He made His covenant with them, and when we made the commitment to accept Jesus into our own lives, we became a part of that covenant agreement. He has promised us to always be there for us – all the time – His peace, His protection, His love, His mercy, His correction, His guidance, His joy, etc. We can stay fully ON TRACK, riding safely on the Covenant Express headed through all of this life and into the next . . . our final destination . . . His Home, our Home, Heaven.
