Drought, Flood, or Gentle Saturation

Many parts of our nation are in a time of severe drought. Even with the blessing of a bit of rain, the time in between the rain has caused the land to become so parched that it does not effect it at all . . . OR . . . it rains so hard, so fast, so much in a short span of time, that it brings flooding. When the floods come, roads become impassible – sometimes trees are uprooted – even buildings have been known to be ‘carried away’.

It is only when there is a gentle, steady, rain that it is able to be properly absorbed into the land – it brings restoration to the flowers, the trees, all vegetation, animals are able to drink freely once more, birds flap their wings happily in play as they refresh themselves. There is a feeling of ‘newness’ in the air. As it is in the natural . . . so it is in the spiritual.

When we deprive ourselves of nourishment (Christian Fellowship, time spent in Church, time spent in studying God’s Word) we allow the land of our heart to become dry, hard, fallow. If this happens, we tend to focus on our surroundings, the ‘drought’ of life’s circumstances. These thoughts consume us, bombard us just like harsh flooding waters poured out upon our very dry hearts. We can easily be swept away by the storms they bring, and the restoration process can be rough – just as in the natural world when flooding occurs. There must be a deep cleaning, carpets, floors, walls all sometimes have to be removed. Followed by disinfecting, then the rebuilding can begin.

How can we avoid having to face these two extreme polar opposites? By a steady, gentle saturation. Again, just as in the natural, so it is in the spiritual. Get your Bible out – use it every day. Open up the lines of communication between yourself and your Creator. Allow Holy Spirit to speak life into your soul – let Him lead your heart into times of refreshing! As you do this, God’s gentle, steady rain will not only wash you but it will seep down into the very depth of your heart and nourish the roots of all that God has planted within you. The result will be flourishing crops, full of fruit! His fruit – gentleness, kindness, goodness, peace, meekness, patience, love, joy, self-control! With this fruit productivity in your life, it will not matter what the enemy tries to flood you with – you CAN be assured that God will see you through – there may be a lot of wind stirring things up, but you have ALL you need to avoid destructive damages!

We do not have control over drought or flooding on the earth, but praise God, we DO have control over these on our faith-walk journey through this life.
