So many times we long for things,
fight for things,
strive for things . . .
They remain just beyond our grasp . . .
Yet we press forward trying to reach them . . .
One of those things is – let’s be honest here – PERFECTION – yep . . . we want others to ‘see’ us as ever so capable – talented, smart, able to handle things with excellence.
However, when we don’t measure up to our own expectations of how we should be –
If someone else doesn’t ‘see’ all of the effort we’ve put in to a project –
simply put . . . we beat ourselves up . . . wondering what we could have done or said differently to achieve the desired results.
Okay, so we won’t always elucidate how the world sees us, or even how our perception of ourselves is, but does that mean we are to give up on trying to strive towards perfection? Hmmm…..
Let me answer both “yes” and “no”.
There is only ONE perfect person – Jesus Christ, Son of God, Messiah, King of Kings, Lord of Lords! That lets us know straight forward that no one, no matter how hard we try, will ever obtain perfection. So, that is the “yes”.
The “no” is that we ARE to become ‘imitators of Christ’ (1 Corinthians 11:1) . . . that means that we are to take on His character, walk in His love, mercy and grace towards all. That also means that we are to trust in His Word that tells us very clearly that as we walk in His ways, all we do will be blessed. We can strive towards doing all things with excellence, fully knowing that everything we accomplish is for His glory, done through His power and by His provision!
It truly matters not what others perceive in our words, actions and attitudes . . . IF . . . we are doing what we are doing as ‘unto the Lord’ and ‘not unto man’!
So . . . next time you find yourself beating yourself up over someone not realizing that you have done something – do a heart check! I know I had to this weekend! Whom am I trying to please by my service anyway?! Sure, it is nice to have people acknowledge you, but if they don’t it absolutely should not matter one iota whatsoever!
Lord, forgive me for my fighting with my own self this weekend over certain situations . . . thank You for reminding me that there is only ONE Who IS perfect and it is not me. May my heart stay pure before You and may all I do and say bring honor to Your Name! Not my name, YOURS!!! Thank You for the privilege of serving You by serving others (whether or not they recognize it or not) – let it all be for You, in You and through You, Holy Spirit – thank You for Your correction, in Jesus Name, amen.
