Getting Caught Up

My dear readers, it has been far too long since I took time away from the things I have been ‘caught up’ in to post some encouragement. So, I thought it only appropriate to speak to this issue for my first official posting after my absence.

What are the THINGS that we allow ourselves to get caught up in? Many of the things that occupy our time are actually good things, but we do allow them to sometimes overwhelm us and entangle us. Then there are those things which come up upon us so quickly that we are blindsided by them and have our shocked selves declaring things like, “What in the world?”, or “Wow did THIS happen?”, or “Where did THAT come from?”, or “How do I even begin to get out of this mess?”

I wish to touch on both of these – good and bad things – that somehow we’ve allowed ourselves to get caught up in.

First, let’s focus on the negative things.

There are accidents that happen, someone is injured, or you’ve lost your vehicle. The company you work for has decided to down size and you happen to be one of those who were let go. A routine doctor visit turned into a devastating diagnosis. These are simply a few examples that we can face in life. There are many. It is our responses, however, to ANY of these seemingly life altering circumstances that controls our destination. Our attitudes and actions DURING the facing of these things, is where our results actually lay. We cannot control the things that happen TO us but we CAN control our responses to them – this is where our success or failure begins to unfurl.

We all have choices to make. We can react in our flesh – kick, scream, throw something, get angry, allow fear to engulf us, worry, let depression set in . . . OR . . . we can turn to The One who has the answers – God! We can fall to our knees,

seek the Lord, cry out to Him, share your thoughts, worries, concerns, fears, devastation, confusion, doubts, whatever it is that you are feeling as you face these ‘things’ that have you all caught up, and allow Him to minister His love and peace into your being in its place. Then, allow Holy Spirit to gently direct your steps as you move on to the next phase of life that God has in store for you!

In Him you will find your answers – for it is written:

“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” 2 Peter 1:3

And, do not ever forget that you do not need to be concerned with your own strength and ability during these trying times – for it is written:

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9   and . . . God also gives us so many mighty examples in His Word of others who overcame EVEN in their weaknesses – by trusting in Him . . . look at Hebrews 11 . . . weaknesses turned into strength! and you CAN rely on His guidance, even if it may seem like foolishness to others around you – “For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” 1 Corinthians 1:25

Secondly, let’s touch on the good things that we allow ourselves to become caught up in.

Family, Ministry Work, Helping Others, Friends, Weight Loss/Exercise, Sports, Furthering our Education, etc.

Well, you may say, there is nothing wrong with any of those . . . and, you would be right . . . HOWEVER . . . when they take us away from, distract us from, our God given tasks, then they ARE wrong (so to speak). Let me explain:

We need to spend time with our family, our loved ones, but if that is the MAIN FOCUS of our lives, then we’ve missed what God has asked us to do.

Ministry work and/or helping others are tough ones . . . yes, we are ‘doing’ good things . . . we are ‘working’ for the Lord, but if it takes away our time of intimate communion with our Lord, then it is not being done in the proper manner. It is quite easy (unfortunately) to become so caught up with the work that we miss out on the worship! We must tread carefully. Remember the example Christ gave us through the life  choice examples of two sisters, Mary and Martha? They both loved the Lord,  but one was so caught up in the ‘doing’ that she missed the ‘being’ (being in the Lord’s presence, learning from Him, worship Him). What Martha (the busy one) was doing was wonderful, a needed thing, however she allowed herself to be so distracted by the doing that she ended up with attitude issues as well. Complaining . . . hmm . . . can anyone relate to this? I know I can, even though I hate to admit it, I have been there and done that!

Weight Loss/Exercise, Sports . . . oh my goodness! I’m in the process of shedding over 125 lbs . . . I’m about 1/3 of the way there and have learned to love going to the senior center to work out and play ping pong for assistance in shaping up and burning calories; and both my husband and I do enjoy sports . . . HOWEVER . . . IF any of these things were to take away from the time we would spend in times of close communion with The Father, and/or the study of His Word, attending church, etc., that too would be the wrong heart attitudes and the wrong things to be caught up in.

You see, dear ones, anything we allow ourselves to become entangled with – they all begin as thoughts – good or bad – what we allow to consume our thoughts leads us down the path to a destination. Do you want your destination to be in line with the destination that God has planned for you? Or to a destination full of despair and negativity?

Reach out to Him – seek His guidance – spend time in worshiping Him – praise Him THROUGH whatever it is that you find yourself being caught up in and allow Him to cut away the things that are binding you up.caught up in worship Allow Holy Spirit to direct you to Scriptures that address your situation and start replacing the negative with His righteous promises! You ARE in control of your attitude – you CAN choose to take captive those negative thoughts – yes, even if your world is falling apart around you – God is still on His Throne, still in control, still loving you and waiting for You to come to Him! Get yourself lost in worship, in His presence – you will see the ‘things’ fade away and hope begin to blossom in your spirit!
