This is a photograph from near the dead sea and it has been known as “Lot’s Wife”. The story goes that when the angels rushed Lot, his wife, and their family out of Sodom and Gomorrah just moments before its destruction, they were instructed to keep moving away from there and to ‘NOT LOOK BACK’ – however, Lot’s wife did look back and was instantly turned into a pillar of salt due to her disobedience.
This seems to us quite drastic a move on God’s part – but it is not. He requires our obedience to His instructions.
We may be guilty of taking backward glances ourselves from time to time . . . and, when I think about the times I’ve done that, I shudder. What if God had treated me the same way? Thankfully, in His great mercy, He has not.
But, this did get me to thinking about it, and my conclusion is simply this . . . I do NOT want to be a pillar of salt! Whether physically OR spiritually!
Paul told the Philippians that even though he didn’t quite comprehend things happening in his life, he made the choice to “forget those things that were behind and reach forth to those things which are before” him (3:13)
I don’t believe that this means we must erase these things from our memories, but to not DWELL on them, or to not LONG for things to be like they were before. When we focus more on “what could have been” or “what if I had . . . ” than we do on what God may have in store for us on the next stage of our journey, we set ourselves up for failure in God’s Kingdom. We can become hardened, spiritually speaking, like Lot’s wife – unable to go on!
He is the God of NOW . . . He lives in eternity . . . every moment – past, present and future – is now for Him. He has a plan for our future – it is a good plan. When He allows our course to turn, there is a reason for it. He desires for us better things. To us, sometimes we don’t like change and we may struggle against it, but dear ones, if we simply trust Him and walk in obedience to what He is directing us, He will cause us to prosper in all we do. Our faith can become one of the greatest resources of spiritual wealth ever imagined! Abundant peace. Abundant joy. Abundant fulfillment in every day life . . . following after God with all our heart, all our strength, all our mind, all our soul . . . we remain soft, pliable, ready to be used mightily and magnificently in His Kingdom!
TRUST & OBEDIENCE are the keys . . . press on . . . don’t look back!
