From that very first embrace, the bond between mother and child is overwhelming.
The Mother Heart’s Journey begins . . . dreams begin to rush through her like water over river rocks after a spring thaw. Plans for the future, what they will become, what their personalities will be like, their great achievements. We can’t help it, it is our God given “mother-gift”. We see nothing but great things ahead for our child.
We love them, we nurture them, we guide, direct, discipline; all in hopes of helping to mold and shape them into the very best person they can be. We teach them in the ways of the Lord, sharing God’s Word with them, assisting them in the application of His principles to their lives.
Then – the hard part – we must let go and allow God to complete the work.
Sometimes their choices take them down completely different paths than that which WE dreamed they would go. They end up becoming a person completely different than the one we had envisioned. It is SO very hard to stand back and watch them make wrong choice after wrong choice after wrong choice. They break your heart time and time again.
You take them before the Lord, you forgive and you pray – then forgive and pray again. The spiritual warfare of a mother’s heart is a difficult battle, but one that through faith we KNOW will be won! It may be a short battle, then on the other hand, it may take years – take heart, dear mothers – God IS faithful.
He spoke to my own broken mother-heart the passage in Luke 22:32 . . . the Lord was talking to Peter (as He knew Peter would deny Him) and told him that satan was going to ‘sift’ him (verse 31) and He said, “But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” What He spoke to me through this verse was the following – first, And when you have turned back, this told me that my own son WOULD turn back to the Lord . . . and, secondly, strengthen your brothers, this told me that he would be used to strengthen others through his testimony! The key . . . my praying for him – not giving up – always trusting God (in His faithfulness) to complete the work He started in him years earlier.
This, honestly, was not always an easy thing. Standing back, observing from the sidelines while wrong choices and the circumstances of those wrong choices followed. Biting my tongue, wiping free-flowing tears over and over again, choosing to trust God for my son, praying protection over him until that time when he decided to answer the Lord’s call on his life.
Then . . . a phone call, or a visit . . . you hear the change, you see the change, hope is restored and rejoicing begins. Your Mother Heart shouts for joy in gratitude, thanking God for answered prayers. The change may only be in the beginning stages, but with renewed hope and determination, your prayers take on a new fervency. You pray for the complete breakthrough in the life of this precious child you held close years earlier – calling forth those dreams into reality for them. Your faith becomes even stronger as you see the change developing . . . you KNOW the answer is on its way! What a wondrous feeling, a new lightness within your heart, and that sweet peace and joy of the Lord start bubbling over . . . and all that you can say is “Thank You, Lord, thank You, Lord, THANK YOU, LORD!!!!”
