We can get so caught up in our thoughts sometimes as we go along the pathway of our life that we forget to take notice of the subtle changes, and then – all of a sudden – it hits us – DARKNESS.
Where in the world am I? How did I get here? What am I supposed to do now? Which way do I go next? With everything within you, you cry out “HELP!!!!”
Then you stand there, in the darkness, listening to the echo, echo, echo, and then. . .silence.
No thinking ahead to bring a lantern, finding yourself beyond any means of contacting the outside world for help, it is you against the emptiness. the vast, dark emptiness.
Then, you start to hear noises. You realize you are not actually alone. But what ARE those noises? Where are they coming from? Are they wild animals? Are they hungry? Are you their dinner? Now what?
Since I have your attention, I would like to address the subject of inner darkness. Recently having a conversation with a young man who shared with me his shock over having actual thoughts of being able to murder someone. This is someone who has always been very loving, kind, compassionate, gentle, giving of himself. It took me by surprise. It shook him to his very core, to say the least.
How does one get to that place? I believe it is somewhat the same way as in our short example above. We get distracted by the things of life. The cares, worries, concerns, struggles, stresses, overworking, health issues, extreme fatigue, etc. and before you know it, you’ve compromised your values. Perhaps you use chemicals/substances to help you through your pain, and keep on pushing yourself. You start thinking if you keep working hard enough, long enough, the rest of it will simply fall into place and correct itself.
Those kind of things only happen in the movies, books, fairy tales. Not in real life. There is only ONE way to overcome the darkness – by entering into the Light!
Jesus IS the Light of the world . . . He IS the ONLY One that can bring us the healing and hope that we need. He ALONE can help us to overcome all the power of the enemy (of the darkness).
Through the power of His Holy Spirit we can learn to take every thought (every single deep, dark, ugly thought) captive and bring it into the obedience of Christ! We can be transformed by the renewing of our mind in Christ Jesus. We can be made new and whole, exchanging our filthy rags of sin, through repentance and by putting our faith in Him, taking on His glorious robe of righteousness, stand boldly before the Throne of God and rightfully declare “Abba, Father (Daddy), thank You, for rescuing me from the darkness!”
